How do we ensure high data quality and freshness?

  1. 1

Instant list downloads are a red flag. If a list is ready to download right away, it's usually outdated. It has likely been sitting in a database getting older over time. That means outdated contacts, more bounced emails, more spam issues, and weaker deliverability before your campaign even begins.

  2. 2

We build every list on request to ensure you get the highest quality data. When you place an order, we source and build your list based on your exact filters and criteria.

  3. 3

Every list we build is put through our human-verification process. Our team manually reviews and validates records. This ensures the highest quality. Learn how our human-verification works.

  4. 4

It takes a couple days to create a custom list, but it is the only way to ensure every contact is fresh and accurate before delivery.

Which Industries Put a CMO on the Executive Team

Executive officers of public companies must report their company stock holdings and trades to the SEC under their exact title. Across more than 4,000 companies, only about 1 in 30 names a CMO as an executive officer, while 1 in 9 names a chief revenue, sales, or commercial officer. The gap is widest at drug makers, energy companies, and software companies. Banks, insurers, and financial firms are the one exception, naming a CMO slightly more often. Sort by either title to see where each one leads.

Selling marketing software or services? When a public company names a growth leader among its executive officers, about 3 times in 4 it is a chief revenue, sales, or commercial officer rather than a CMO, so pitch both. Wholesalers employ three sales managers for every marketing manager, and retailers ten, so add sales and marketing directors to reach the full buying team.

CMO or Chief Revenue Officer, by Company Size

The larger the company, the more likely its CMO sits on the executive team. Large public companies are three times as likely as small ones to name a CMO as an executive officer, and at about 1 in 4 large companies with a growth executive, that executive is a CMO. At mid-size and small companies, about 4 in 5 name only a revenue, sales, or commercial chief. Below the executive team, marketing is usually run by a marketing director or VP of marketing, so build your list around the titles your target companies actually use.

Selling to smaller companies? Only 6% of small public companies name any growth executive among their officers, so the person who runs marketing is usually a marketing director or VP of marketing. Add those titles to your CMO list to reach them.

Where Marketing and Sales Directors Work

About 395,000 marketing managers, the group that includes marketing directors and VPs of marketing, work in the U.S., earning an average of $178,000 a year. Half of them work in just five states: California, New York, Texas, Florida, and Illinois. New York stands out, with almost as many marketing managers as California and more marketing managers than sales managers. Pay is highest in Massachusetts, California, and New York. Targeting New York? It is one of only two places, along with DC, where marketing managers outnumber sales managers. In California, Texas, and Florida, there are about two sales managers for every marketing manager, so add sales and marketing directors to reach the full buying team.

FAQ

CMOs change jobs often. How do you keep the list current?

Marketing leaders change companies often, and when a new CEO arrives the marketing team is frequently reorganized. Companies also rename the role, folding the CMO into a chief growth, chief commercial, or chief revenue officer. That is why we build each list when you order it. Every record is sourced fresh, checked against the company's own website and public profiles, reviewed by a member of our team, and validated a final time before delivery. See how our human-verification process works.

Can I see sample CMO records first?

Yes. Sign up for a free account and we will send ten human-verified CMO contacts that match your filters, so you can test the data in a real campaign before you order more.

What is the difference between a CMO, a marketing director, and a chief revenue officer?

A CMO sets marketing strategy, brand, and budget and usually leads the whole marketing team. A marketing director typically runs day-to-day campaigns and is often the top marketer at smaller companies. A chief revenue officer, chief sales officer, or chief commercial officer oversees sales, and often marketing too, with one goal of growing revenue. At public companies, a revenue or commercial chief is named as an executive officer about 3.6 times as often as a CMO. If you are not sure who owns the decision, order all three titles and compare results.

Most small companies do not have a CMO. Can I reach their marketing directors instead?

Yes. At smaller companies the top marketer is usually a marketing director or VP of marketing, not a CMO. Filter by employee count and revenue, then add marketing directors to your list so you reach the person who actually runs marketing at each company.

Can I build a sales and marketing directors email list?

Yes. Many purchases of marketing software, agency services, and lead data are approved by sales and marketing together. We can add sales directors, VPs of sales, chief revenue officers, and heads of demand generation at the same companies. Just name the titles when you order.

How is a CMO list delivered, and can it go into my CRM?

You get a CSV or Excel file a few business days after you order, once every contact has been checked. Records can include work email, office phone, LinkedIn profile, and company details, and Starter and Pro orders can be exported directly to your CRM.
